Insurance Advice

In the event of a fire, flood or even tornado, it is important to think about the right kind of insurance for you.

Here are our top tips for getting covered and making a claim.

Before an Incident

Speak to a range of insurers to compare the services they offer and obtain appropriate buildings and contents cover - if you are a tenant speak to your landlord to discuss cover they may already have in place

Discuss with potential insurers any protection measures you have taken at your property such as flood proofing - this may help to reduce your premium

Pack a disposable camera, notebook and insurance company details in your grab bag, this will be useful for documenting and reporting any loss and damage

You may wish to consider specific services such as

Drying out, repairing and restoring your property if you live in a flood risk area

Repair or replacement of damaged belongings and furniture

Alternative accommodation while your home is uninhabitable

Professional fees such as solicitors and surveyors

After an Incident

Contact your insurance company at the earliest opportunity and follow their instructions to progress a claim

Make an inventory of damaged items including photographs and descriptions

Do not throw anything away until your insurance company has assessed the claim and confirmed you can do so

Keep a record of all telephone conversations made including the agent you spoke to, time, date and the advice given

Keep a record (including receipts) of all money spent as a result of the disruption

Remember!

Keep all correspondence relating to a claim including a diary of events.
